The project investigates and evaluates perceptions of India within the EU as well as EU policy
responses to the rise of India. By using methods such as discourse analysis and process tracing, it provides an account of how particular perceptions emerge and how they shape the responses of the EU to the Indian policies in selected multilateral institutions. The project will then evaluate if India is indeed substantially challenging the status quo and the existing rules within multilateral institutions or rather shares European values and foreign policy goals in many ways but seeks to work for a more multipolar world order. Research will also include a comparison of EU responses to India and to other emerging powers such as South Africa, Russia, and China.
