A sum of 978 students were absent for the Secondary School Leaving Certificate (SSLC) examination's Language paper I in the educational districts of Madurai, Melur and Usilampatti on Wednesday, as per the Education Department officials.
45,744 regular candidates and 1,256 private candidates, in total were anticipated to appear for the SSLC examinations in the 3 educational districts. But, on the very first day of the examination, 858 regular candidates and 120 private candidates were not present, the officials said.
"The candidate list was based on the enrolment list prepared in the beginning of the academic year. Several students would have dropped out of schools or migrated to other districts. Some would not have appeared for the exam owing to ill health," said Chief Educational Officer C. Amuthavalli.
She added that the number of absentees is high all across the state, as a deletion list was not prepared by the Education Department during the middle of the academic year.
In the educational district of Usilampatti, the examination is being conducted at 28 centres, while 57 centres in Madurai educational district and 8 centres in Melur educational district are hosting the exam.
On Wednesday, Kakkaipadiniyar School was visited by District Collector L. Subramanian, accompanied by the CEO and other officials. Uninterrupted power supply during the exam hours, has been assured by the district administration, a press release from the Collectorate said.
Ms. Amuthavalli informed that no case of malpractice was reported on Wednesday.
