In an effort to align with the National Educational Policy (NEP 2020) and enrich the undergraduate educational experience, the Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur (IIT Kharagpur) has unveiled a series of substantial reforms in its undergraduate (UG) programs commencing from the academic year 2024-25, specifically at the BTech and BS levels. Under these reforms, students will have the option to pursue five-year dual degree programs after completing their second or third year of study.

Furthermore, students will be afforded the opportunity to opt for five-year dual degree programs upon the completion of their second or third year of study. These dual degree programs can be pursued by students either within their respective parent departments or through interdisciplinary pathways offered across diverse schools and centers.
Students will have the flexibility to select either a five-year dual degree program within their parent department or opt for interdisciplinary dual degree programs (IDDP) offered by various schools and centers within the institute. This includes several innovative options such as five-year dual degree programs, removal of branch change constraints, double major choices, and semester away programs.
The primary objective of this initiative is to introduce new opportunities, allowing students to pursue unique combinations such as a BS (Hons) in Economics paired with an MTech in Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning, or a BTech (Hons) in Civil Engineering alongside an MTech in Financial Engineering.
