On 19 September, a group of students of the Jadavpur University in Kolkata, laid siege to offices and locked in the varsity's vice chancellor, assistant vice chancellor and the registrar hostage for the last 24 hours and other officials to protest the suspension of two students for ragging, an official said on Thursday.
Students demanded that the punishment be meted out to two 4th year engineering students on charges of ragging be withdrawn immediately. University authorities say that these students have been punished in accordance with the university laws and UGC norms; hence the charges cannot be withdrawn.
