Students from Central Institutes can join IITs without GATE score card

Students can join IITs without GATE
Students who are studying in Central Funded Technical Institutes (CFTIs) can join the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) to pursue Doctorate of Philosophy (Ph.D) programme without GATE score.

IIT Council in its 47th meeting had taken the decision to encourage the students to pursue Ph.D in IITs.

The meeting was chaired by HRD minister MM Pallam Raju and IIT council officials on 16 Sept 2013.

Candidates who have 70% of marks in their bachelor's degree from any CFTIs will be eligible for Ph.D programme admission in IITs without IITs.

IITs and IISc jointly conduct the Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) exam every year for admissions to M.Sc, M.Tech and Ph.D programmes.

Normally, IITs will consider GATE score for postgraduate programmes admissions.

Among the measures approved is to encourage students to take up PhD programmes in IITs and the IIT research systems to work closely with national development goals such as defence, energy, urban development and manufacturing.

The IIT Council also approved the decision of the JAB (Advanced) to continue with the examination pattern introduced in 2012. The meeting was attended by chairmen and directors of 16 IITs besides other members of the Council.
