Greater Noida June 2013: Student of GNIOT (Greater Noida Institute of Technology) Final Year Mechanical (B.Tech. Course), choose to develop an Ecological Bike to optimize fuel consumption by saving the idle fuel wastage while negotiating congested areas on its travel path. The Project was guided by H.O.D-S.K. Arora.
The bike (Motor Cycle) was developed using a conventional bike available with one of the group student. An alternator has been integrated on the motor cycle which receives the power from the bike chain and delivers the power developed to a 12 V 20 Ah battery. The battery is in charging mode only when the bike is running on uncongested roads. Thus it consumes petrol optimally.
Whenever the bike enters the congested area, the ignition is switched off thus stopping the consumption of petrol, and the battery power is used to drive the bike through an electric motor as long as travel runs through the congested area. This way petrol consumption has been saved up to about 12 to 15%. However, further more trials should be done to arrive at actual saving figures in petrol consumption.
