Pranab Mukherjee addressed 45th Convocation of Utkal University

President Pranab Mukherjee on Thursday addressed 45th convocation of Utkal University.

During his address at the convocation President Pranab Mukherjee says universities must help us in meeting the moral challenge of society.

He said that distributive justice in society can be ensured thru sound education policy. President Pranab Mukherjee also raised concern over no Indian university finds place in world's top 200 varsities.

Governor SC Jamir and Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik attended the convocation. President Pranab Mukherjee conferred prestigious 'Honoris Causa' to Art of Living founder Sri Sri Ravi Shankar, neurologist Dr. Sanatan Rath and former Chairperson of State Human Rights Commission Justice RK Patra.

This apart, Crime Branch ADG BK Sharma will receive gold medal for scoring highest marks in Legal Jurisprudence paper of LLB examination. Reportedly, 97 students will be felicitated with Gold medals and 237 students with PHD degrees at the convocation.

Speaking at the occasion CM Patnaik welcome the President Mukherjee for his maiden visit to the state as president. On this occasion CM Patnaik highlighted the development of state in higher education sector.

It was Mukherjee's maiden visit to the state after assuming the office of the President of India in July last year. It should be noted that as per the schedule the President arrived at the Bhubaneswar airport on Wednesday at about 7.40 pm and spend the night at the Raj Bhavan.

On Thursday the president is scheduled to visit Puri Jagannath temple after the convocation and stay for sometime at the Rajbhaban in Puri. Special arrangements have been made by the temple administration to make a hassle-free visit.

About University:
The Utkal University, established in the year 1943, is the seventeenth oldest University in India. Its present campus at Vani Vihar, Bhubaneswar is located on a sprawling 399.9 Acre area in the heart of Bhubaneswar, with the Sainik School to its north, National High way No.5 to its south, Regional Research Laboratory and Institute of Physics to its west and the South Eastern Railway line to its east.

The Foundation stone of this Campus was laid by Dr. Rajendra Prasad, the first President of India on 1st January 1958 and the Campus was inaugurated by Dr. S. Radhakrishnan, the second President of India on 2nd January 1963.

The University has now the jurisdiction over 9 districts, viz, Angul, Cuttack, Dhenkanal, Jajpur, Jagatsinghpur, Kendrapara, Khurda, Nayagarh and Puri and is spread over an area of 24,973 sq. kilometers catering to the needs of higher education of a population of more than 110 lakhs.
