Not just the protest but they have also demanded students union elections in the university. Protesters say that "This is part of our 'Save Jamia' campaign against the administration's attempts to impose an astronomical fee hike and curb the democratic rights of students".
Also, students from JNU and DU has joined the protest in order to show a solidarity as the protesters demand that fee hike should be rolled back. A Student of Jamia said "The administration has managed to take such arbitrary decision because there is no students union in the university over the past six years".
The administration had justified the fee hike, citing new projects such as a laboratory at AJK Mass Communication Research Centre that needed money to execute. On a statement made by protesters it was noted that the representatives from the administration have threatened the students. And more than 35 students have been issued show-cause notices for participating in a peaceful sit-in at Jamia a few days ago.
What do you think of the fee hike? Was it a real exigency? Is it necessary to have a student union in every colleges/universities/ institutes?
