Online Counselling - All India Quota Medical Seats

SupremeCourt Permits Medical Counselling
On Thursday, 7th June, 2012 Supreme Court granted permission to Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) in order to begin online counselling for providing seats for over 2000 candidates in Medical Colleges for MBBS and BDS course.

It is said that about 15% of All-India Quota seats shall be provided from this academic session. The director of Medical Council of India (MCI), said it had no objection to online counselling, a bench of justices KS Radhakrishnan and JS Khehar cleared decks for implementation of DGHS proposal.

However, to do away with the existing mode of counselling that require candidates to be present in person. Usually Delhi used to be the main centre from where allotment of 15% all-India quota of undergraduate medical and dental course seats in various medical colleges used to take place, with candidates participating in counselling through video conferencing from other centres like Mumbai, Kolkata and Chennai.

This proposal for online counselling was recommended by an expert committee, headed by Director General of Health Services, which was tasked by the ministry of Health and family welfare to find out ways and means to address the problem of seats remaining vacant even after two rounds of counselling every year.

"The committee has recommended that by charging the method of allotment from existing counselling by personal appearance that by changing the method of allotment from existing counselling by personal appearance to online counselling and by increasing the number of candidates eligible to take part in counselling both in Undergraduate and Postgraduate courses may significantly reduce he number of seats that remain unfilled at the end of All-India quota counselling", says the DGHS application before the apex court.

Well, this has been a cheering moment for those aiming to join Medical MBBA and BDS courses. The decision made by the supreme court has been helpful for students who were unable to attend their counselling(Offline).
