52 Percent Of OBC Quota To Be Raised, Sharad Yadav

Raise OBC Quota By 52 Percent, JDU
On Friday, Janta Dal (United) (JDU) urged that the reservation for OBCs in educational institutions and government jobs must be raised from 27% to 52%. Besides, the party's national President, shared that Yadav has also demanded to do away with the provision of creamy layer in OBC reservation. He said that the Mumbai Commission had estimated OBC population to be 52% but according to his estimate, it has now risen to 60%.

Supreme Court had pegged the reservation at 50% with confined quota of 27% to OBC. A legal framework should be prepared to scrap this 50% limit and OBC should get reservation in conformity with their population of 52% quota.

Yadav further added that the provision of creamy layers is redundant as all reserved seats are not filled up by OBC candidates. He also said that this provision is not based on Constitution and it is an invention of Supreme Court (SC) led by personal opinion of judges. They accepted it earlier as it did not matter who among the OBC's got the reservation.

Yadav also said that, "The provision is meant for shielding the economically poor among OBC's from the ri9ch in this category even through there is no mention of “Creamy layer of Economic advancement of Backwardness” in the Constitution. Since the provision was passed through the SC judgment, an appropriate constitutional amendment should be done for canceling this provision which deprive certain section of OBC from availing reservation benefits.”
