IIM Lucknow alumni to assist UNICEF programmes

By Kamalika Bhattacharya

IIM Lucknow's( IIM-L) Alumni Association partners with UNICEF to help with their initiatives in India and globally. A coordinated simultaneous world-wide meeting of the IIM Lucknow community - a confluence of the best brains in the corporate world, putting their heads together to develop meaningful activities to assist their alma mater and UNICEF.

Traditionally an alumni meet, focuses on the alumni getting together, networking, and celebrating. Moving away from this traditional way of organising alumni meets, IIM Lucknow has come up with a novel variation. This year, the Institute’s annual summer alumni meets have been consolidated into a single world wide meeting of the IIM-L community. This co-ordinated meeting is being held at 10 locations across the globe (5 locations in India and 5 international locations) on Saturday 7th May 2011. The event follows the sun, starting from Singapore, then reaching India (Bangalore, Chennai,
Hyderabad, Mumbai and New Delhi), moving on to Kuwait, followed by London, then crossing Atlantic to New York and the last get together of the day will be San Francisco.

More than 1500 alumni participated along with IIM-L faculty and students. The IIM-L Alumni Association would develop a framework by which IIML alumni can use their experience and skills to assist UNICEF programmes. With 5000+ alumni in a number of management positions worldwide, the IIM Lucknow alumni are confident of making a meaningful contribution to the country via UNICEF. This is not a first for the IIM-L alumni community in contributing to social causes. IIM-L alumni have in the past actively participated in the Kargil War Relief Efforts, Tsunami Relief Mobilisation, and other occasions, and have also been maintaining benevolent funds for IIM Lucknow staff and alumni. Not to be forgotten is the way the Institute alumni came together in support of Manjunath Shanmugam, and the way they successfully fought the long legal battle for justice for one of their community.

The meet has generated significant interest in the IIM Lucknow community. Dr. Devi Singh, Director, IIM Lucknow said that the movement led by famous social activist Shri Anna Hazare has shown that power to change still lies with us, the common people; all we need to do is pool in our knowledge, willingness and desire to do something for the country. This meet would be a small, but meaningful, step in that direction.
