Marine Engineering involves the work of construction and maintenance of the ships as well as other sailing vessels.Marine Engineers check for the smooth functioning of all electric motors, steam engines and propulsive engines etc. They continuously take efforts to improve the efficiencies of gas turbine, existing shipboard conventional steam, nuclear propulsion plants and diesel.

Eligibility:

The candidate should have a Bachelors degree in Engineering.There are certain medical norms (physical fitness) that need to be met to get entry into the Marine Engineering courses. One should have a good physique with sound health.Some essential personal attributes includes organizing ability, team spirit, ability to get on well with others, keep cool and cope well under pressure, ability to handle crisis, excellent communication skills.

 

Courses:
For getting admission to B. E. in marine engineering, the eligibility required is 10+2 with Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics and English. It is full time 4 years course.Training Ship Chanakya, Mumbai and Marine Engineering Research Institute (MERI), Kolkata - also conduct courses in Marine Engineering. The New Delhi - based International Maritime Institute also conducts courses related to the field. The degree offered in these courses is that of Engineering or B.Sc. in Nautical Sciences. A number of private institutes also offer courses in Marine Engineering. However, such courses must be approved by the Mumbai-based Director General of Shipping.

Career Scope In Marine Engineering:

With gaining popularity, this branch of engineering offers employment in varied sectors like Merchant Navy and Manufacturing Industries. Job opportunities are available in ports, government sectors and Shipping industries. Some Engineers may choose to become trainers in reputed Training Centres for Marine Engineers.

Remuneration:

While joining the Merchant Navy as Junior Engineer one can earn upto Rs.25,000 to Rs.30,000 per month.For those recruited in any foreign vessel can expect higher salaries. The job also entitles the virtue of traveling for more than six months outside Indian borders and adds for receiving other benefits too. Apart from this, Marine Engineers employed with private firms for designing, research, consulting, training and education purposes are extremely well paid.
