The central government has given a nod to establish 14 new Indian Institutes of Information Technology (IIITs) across the country.
A proposal for establishment of 20 new IIITs on a not-for-profit public-private partnership was made. The central government, as for now has given an approval for establishment of 14 IIITs. This was informed by Shashi Tharoor, minister of human resource development, in a written reply in Lok Sabha.
Under this scheme, a total of 50 to 100 acres of land will be provided free of cost by the concerned state government for setting up of IIITs.
The 14 new IIITs will be established in the following states:
- Andhra Pradesh
- Assam
- Gujarat
- Haryana
- Himachal Pradesh
- Karnataka
- Kerala
- Madhya Pradesh
- Rajasthan
- Tamil Nadu
- Maharashtra
- Uttar Pradesh
- West Bengal
- Tripura
In 2013, government had opened the 5 new IIITs across the country.
