History of World Pharmacists Day

The First World Pharmacists Day was observed in 2009. The day was instituted by the International Pharmaceutical Federation (FIP) Council during the 'World Congress of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences 2009' which was being held in the Turkish capital Istanbul.

Why the date of September 25 was chosen?

Because the FIP - a global body of pharmacists - had come into existence on this very date in 1912.

  • FIP is an international NGO representing pharmacists and pharmaceutical science & education globally.
  • They represent thousands of pharmacists, pharmaceutical scientists and pharmaceutical educators through 144 national organisations in the world. Their head office is in the Netherlands.
  • It was established to support the development of the pharmacy profession, through practice and emerging scientific innovations, and through developing the pharmacy workforce in order to meet the world's health care needs and expectations.


Who are pharmacists?

  • Pharmacists, also known as druggists or chemists, are health professionals who formulate, control, preserve and dispense medications for patients around the globe.
  • They know the medicines inside out and thus are able to advise on how-when-and-in what-quantity medicines should be used to achieve maximum benefit and minimal side effects.
  • They know how the medicines interact when taken together and thus save you from harmful side effects.

  • Tuberculosis deaths were reduced by 14% between 2015 and 2019.
  • The maternal mortality ratio dropped by about 38% worldwide between 2000 and 2017.
