World Literacy Day 2022 to be celebrated on September 8: Know History, Significance and How to Celebrate
The world is going to Celebrate International Literacy Day 2022 on September 8. The day promotes the importance of literacy and learning around the world as a tool for achieving overall socio-economic development. Educators and policymakers also come together on this day to discuss and find ways to remove challenges to spreading learning and literacy around the world.
Though the concept of Distance learning is not new, the Corona pandemic has made us realize how technology can remove all the physical barriers that learning and literacy face globally. It is a day to ask why learning should be confined to limited space and students when technology has made it possible to spread it reaches far and wide. It is also a day to find and promote better ways and technology to impart education and training to every student willing to learn in the world.
International Literacy Day: History and Significance
- UNESCO declared 8 September as International Literacy Day on 26 October 1966 with the objective to remove the problem of illiteracy from the world.
- The UN recognized that illiteracy is just not the inability to read and write. It begets a host of problems like lack of economic opportunities and thus poverty, suppression of human rights and dignity, and exclusion from social and economic development plans of government among many. So it's all the more important to have this scar removed from the face of humanity.
- It is through literacy and communication that common people come to know of their rights and the means to protect the same. Literacy has a key role to play in eliminating poverty, lowering child mortality, population control, and attaining gender equality.
- Literacy is also the main component of the UN's sustainable development goals program 2015.
- Literacy helps the masses communicate and give better feedback to the government and its policy. Removing shortcomings of existing schemes and framing more effective policy changes

India's HDI Rank is a lowly 131 among the total of 189 countries with a meagre HDI Score of 0.645 as of the 2019 Report. The good thing is that our HDI Score has risen from 0.429 to 0.645, registering a growth of 50.3 per cent. However, there is a long way to go as we still feature in a not-so-well-off group named "medium human development category countries."
