GI Tag which is an abbreviation of Geographical Indication, is an especial identity of any region, town or state. The tag is given on the name of some special products or signs which symbolize the uniqueness of that particular region.

Why is the GI Tag Beneficiary?
When the GI Tag is given to a particular product, it certifies that the product is made up by using traditional methods, contains special qualities, and represents a reputation of that geographical origin.
Geographical Indication can also be considered as a protection against violation of copyright and patent issues.
Category Of GI Tags
The Geographical Indication came into force from September 15, 2003. In 2004-2005 the Darjeeling Tea was given the first GI Tag in India.
GI Tag is basically given to the products related to agriculture, handicrafts, foodstuffs, spirit drinks and Industrial Products. India has more than 300 geographical Indications so far.
Regulatory Body Of GI Tags
The rules and regulations of GI Tag are governed by the World Trade Organization's agreement on Trade related aspects of Intellectual Property Rights at International level. Geographical Indication is a component of Intellectual Property Rights under the Paris Convention held for the protection of Industrial Property.
In India the Geographical Indications of Goods (Registration and Protection) Act, 1999 came into force w.e.f. September 2003, under which the GI registration is administered.
