Chicago Convention: The Originator of the Civil Aviation

It was in 1944 when the delegates from 54 countries attending an event in the Grand Ballroom of the Stevens Hotel in Chicago at the invitation of the United States signed the Convention on International Civil Aviation, which was popularly known as the 'Chicago Convention'.

Preserving Goodwill and Understanding Between the Nations and Its Citizens

In 1996, in accordance with an ICAO initiative and with the full cooperation of the Canadian Government, the United Nations General Assembly adopted resolution to recognize officially December 7 as the International Civil Aviation Day. The resolution called upon the countries to look for future development of international civil aviation that can immensely help in creating and preserving goodwill and understanding between the nations and peoples of the world.

Further, the UN General Assembly encouraged governments and related national, regional and intergovernmental organizations to take suitable steps to mark the International Civil Aviation Day.

The main aim to celebrate the International Civil Aviation Day is to generate awareness all around the world about the role being played by aviation and international air travel in socio-economic development. This international agreement allowed the global civil aviation system to grow peacefully in a manner that will benefit all countries and its people.

International Civil Aviation Day also acknowledges the unique role played by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) in ensuring the cooperation, safety, and efficiency of global aviation.

ICAO is a specialized agency of the UN that coordinates the principles and techniques of international air navigation and helps in the planning and development of international air transport so that this sector can grow smoothly and safely.

Theme of International Civil Aviation Day

Advancing Innovation for Global Aviation Development

Every five years, the ICAO Council issues anniversary theme for the International Civil Aviation Day. The council also suggests a single theme for the four intervening years between the anniversary period.

In 2019, on the 75th anniversary of International Civil Aviation Day, the theme was "75 Years of Connecting the World." The theme for 2020 was "Advancing Innovation for Global Aviation Development." The council is retaining this theme till 2023.
