The Indian Navy is the guardian of the sea which protects Indian coastlines from foreign invasions. Indian Navy is one of the 3 branches of the Indian Armed Force which is headed by the President of India. NAVY is an abbreviation of Nautical Army Volunteers Yeoman.

 

December 4 is commemorated as the Indian Navy day every year. The day is marked to recognize the achievements and role of the Indian Navy to the country.

The day is also observed to commemorate Operation Trident which was launched on the same day in 1971 against Pakistan during the Indo-Pak War. The Indian Navy played a crucial role during the war. Indian Navy Day is observed to commemorate the attack and to pay tribute to all the martyrs.

The Indian Navy operates above, on, and under the ocean's surface to protect us. It protects the marine borders of the country.

On this day?

On Dec 3, 1971, Pakistan launched an attack on Indian air bases. In response to the attacks, the Indian Navy targeted the Pakistan Naval Headquarters of Karachi. It launched three missile boats, INS Veer, INS Nipat and INS Nirghat, and Vidyut-class boats, towards Karachi and sank three Pakistani Navy ships, including PNS Khaibar. The whole operation was named as Operation Trident, lead by Commodore Kasargod Pattanashetti Gopal Rao.

The theme for Indian Navy Day 2022 is 'Swarnim Vijay Varsh', marking 50 years of India's victory in the Indo-Pakistan war in 1971. In theyear 2022, the theme was "Indian Navy Combat Ready, Credible & Cohesive".

The chief of the Indian Navy is the highest rank officer with 4 stars and known as the Chief of Naval Staff or CNS. Currently Admiral R. Hari Kumar is serving as the 25th CNS.

India shares maritime borders with seven of its neighbouring countries named; Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Maldives, Myanmar, Indonesia and Thailand and keeps surveillance on its maritime border round the clock.
