Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi, also known as Mahatma Gandhi, was a lawyer, freedom activist, and politician from India. Gandhiji was born at Porbandar, Gujarat, on October 2, 1869. His father, Karamchand Gandhi, was the Chief Minister (diwan) of the state of Porbandar. Putlibai, his mother, was a religious woman.

At the age of 18, he moved to England to study law. After returning to India, he began working as a lawyer at the Bombay High Court. He moved to South Africa and began practicing law. He protested there against the unfairness and cruel treatment of native Africans and Indians by white people.

In 1915, he returned to India and became interested in politics. To struggle against British colonial control, Mahatma Gandhi employed the concepts of truth and nonviolence as weapons. He worked to improve the lot of Harijans. He campaigned against untouchability and for Hindu-Muslim cooperation.

He battled for freedom against the British imperialists through his liberation movements such as the Non-cooperation movement, the Khilafat movement, and the civil disobedience campaign. In 1942, he founded the Quit India movement to end British control in India. On his initiative, India gained independence in 1947.

People refer to him as 'Bapu' and the 'Father of the Nation'. Nathuram Godse, a Hindu zealot, shot him dead in 1948. Gandhiji's life is an inspiration to us all.
