The International Day of Museums is celebrated every year on May 18, since 1977 by ICOM (International council of Museums). Museums around the world commemorate this day and last year more than 37,000 Museums, from around 158 Countries participated in the event.

So this year's theme is: "The Power of Museums"
Every museum has a lot to say to us. It's a place to discover the roots of our past to create a better tomorrow. This year's theme is based on 3 verticals: "The Power of achieving sustainability, The Power of innovating on digitalization and accessibility and The Power of community building through education."
Why is International Museum Day Celebrated?
The day is marked to raise awareness about the importance of Museums as a medium of cultural enrichment, cultural exchange and as a symbol of cooperation and peace to develop mutual understanding among people.
What is ICOM?
ICOM ( International council of Museums) is the one and only global organization for Museums established in 1947. It's a membership association which establishes professional and ethical standards for museum activities. It's a global group of museum professionals to make recommendations on issues related to cultural heritage and promotion of capacity building and advance knowledge.
International Museum Day in INDIA
When India is celebrating the 75th anniversary of its Independence as 'Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav', the Ministry of Culture has announced a week long celebration from May 16 to 20, to mark the significance of Museums as our cultural heritage.
People are being urged to visit Museums where a week-long celebration is being organized. The National Museum (New Delhi), National Gallery of Modern Art ( New Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru), Allahabad Museum (Prayagraj), Indian Museum (Kolkata), Salar Jung Museum (Hyderabad) are some of the leading Indian museums who are enthusiastically participating to celebrate IMD.
A series of diverse activities like special exhibitions, musical sessions, dance shows, projection mapping shows, free admission for a week, and extended museum hours are some strategies adopted to attract diverse audiences by offering a holistic museum experience to people of all age groups. 'Museums in India', a mobile app is going to be launched soon which enables us to have all information regarding Indian Museums on our screen. Institute of National Museum is also conducting a webinar on a title; 'Museology as a Profession: Challenges and prospects', on the occasion of IMD 2022.

- The Ministry of Tribal Affairs has sanctioned Tribal Freedom fighters museums in 11 states under the scheme 'Support to TRIs', the states are Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur, Mizoram, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, Gujarat, AP, Telangana, Kerala and Goa.
