World NGO Day is a global celebration dedicated to acknowledging the significant contributions of non-governmental organisations (NGOs) in shaping a better world. Observed annually on February 27th, this day serves as a moment to pay tribute to the often unrecognized heroes who work tirelessly to uplift communities and advocate for social causes.

It highlights the invaluable role that NGOs play in driving positive change, promoting development, and advocating for the well-being of marginalized populations.
Since its inception in 2014, World NGO Day aims to raise awareness about the diverse functions of NGOs, from grassroots initiatives to policy advocacy. It acknowledges the commitment of these organizations to addressing issues such as poverty and education. This day honors the individuals and teams behind NGOs, recognizing their efforts to foster a more compassionate world.
The history of World NGO Day dates back to 2009 when a group of socially conscious individuals united with the goal of recognizing the efforts of NGOs. Recognizing the pivotal role NGOs play in shaping society, this group organized an international conference called "InterAction" in Geneva, Switzerland, in December 2009. During this conference, they established a dedicated day for acknowledging NGOs' achievements globally. February 27th was chosen as the date, commemorating the signing of the Estoril Declaration, which outlines important principles guiding NGOs.
The inaugural authorized celebration of World NGO Day took place on February 27th, 2010, attended by numerous NGOs worldwide.
The theme for World NGO Day 2024, "Building a Sustainable Future: The Role of NGOs in Achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)," underscores the critical role that NGOs play in advancing global sustainability. In the face of complex challenges, the focus on sustainable development goals is increasingly vital. This theme acknowledges and celebrates the dedication of NGOs in addressing crucial issues like poverty, inequality, environmental conservation, and healthcare. By emphasizing the role of NGOs in achieving the SDGs, the theme highlights their proactive efforts in effecting positive and lasting changes in communities worldwide. It serves as a call to action, urging collective support and collaboration to create a future where sustainability and social responsibility are paramount in global development efforts.
