World Book Day 2022: Organised by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), the World Book and Copyright Day or International Day of the Book is an annual event aimed at promoting books, publishing, copyright and reading habits among people across the world. This year, the 28th year of World Book Day is observed with the theme 'Read...So You Never Feel Alone' in 100 countries around the world, including in India, encouraging and creating awareness among people about reading and books.
"Indeed, books are vital vehicles to access, transmit and promote education, science, culture and information worldwide," UNESCO Director-General Audrey Azoulay said on the occasion of World Book and Copyright Day 2022.
World Book Day History
World Book Day or International Day of the Book is observed every year on April 23 since its inception in the year 1995 in Paris, when it was first formally observed by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) honouring the contributions of eminent authors in the world of literature.
The idea of World Book Day was originally conceived in the year 1922 by a Spanish author Vicente Clavel Andrés to honour author Miguel de Cervantes and was celebrated for the first time on 7 October 1926 which later was formalised by UNESCO in 1995
World Book Day Importance
The World Book and Copyright Day by UNESCO is significant for honouring the departing of three literary giants on April 23 - William Shakespeare, Miguel de Cervantes, and Inca Garcilaso de la Vega recalling their efforts and contribution towards innovation, knowledge and changing minds.
World Book Day lends voice to human diversity, encourages the exchange of ideas and promotes admiration for diverse cultures cutting across borders bringing the world together, both real and imagined.

'Read...So You Never Feel Alone' is the theme of World Book Day 2022 and the Mexican city of Guadalajara is given the mantle of World Book Capital by UNESCO to foster a reading culture in all ages that will lead to a positive social change, combat violence, and build a culture of peace.
