What is PM Surya Ghar Yojna, how to get free electricity?

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on February 15, 2024, launched the PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana is a transformative government scheme aimed at providing free electricity to households across India. This initiative offers households a substantial subsidy to install solar panels on their roofs, covering up to 40% of the installation cost.

What is PM Surya Ghar Yojna ?

With an expected reach of 1 crore households, the scheme is projected to save the government Rs. 75,000 crore annually in electricity costs. This initiative aims to provide one crore households with up to 300 units of free electricity each month. Announcing a series of measures to promote green growth and renewable energy, the Finance Minister stated in her Budget 2024 speech, "The rooftop solar scheme has received a remarkable response with over 1.28 crore registrations and 14 lakh applications." Suitable Rooftop Solar Plant Capacity for Households

  • 0-150 1-2 kW ₹ 30,000/- to ₹ 60,000/-
  • 150-300 2-3 kW ₹ 60,000/- to ₹ 78,000/-
  • > 300 Above 3 kW ₹ 78,000/-

Eligibility

To be eligible for the scheme, households must meet the following criteria:

  • Must be an Indian citizen.
  • Must own a house with a roof suitable for installing solar panels.
  • Must have a valid electricity connection.
  • Must not have availed any other subsidy for solar panels.

Application Process

Online Application Steps:

  • Visit the Official Website: Begin your application process online.
  • Registration: Provide the following details:
  • State
  • Electricity Distribution Company
  • Electricity Consumer Number
  • Mobile Number
  • Email
  • Login: Use your Consumer Number and Mobile Number to log in.
  • Apply for Rooftop Solar: Complete the application form.
  • Feasibility Approval: Wait for approval from DISCOM. Once approved, proceed with installation by a registered vendor.
  • Installation and Submission: After installation, submit plant details and apply for a net meter.
  • Inspection and Certification: Post-installation, DISCOM will inspect and generate a commissioning certificate.
  • Subsidy Disbursement: Submit bank account details and a cancelled cheque. Receive the subsidy within 30 days.
