From Jadavpur University to Columbia Business School
Mitra's academic journey began in Kolkata, where he earned a Bachelor of Engineering degree from Jadavpur University. He later pursued an MBA in Applied Value Investing from Columbia Business School, where he was also a Dean's List honoree.
His educational background is particularly notable because his undergraduate degree was not from an IIT or NIT. Instead, Jadavpur University became the foundation for a career that would eventually take him into international finance, investment management and real estate.
From PwC to Wall Street
Mitra began his professional career at PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC). He later moved into investment management, working in senior analytical roles at Fidelity Investments and Citadel Investment Group.
He subsequently joined Millennium Management as a portfolio manager specialising in real estate securities. At Millennium, he was involved in analysing commercial real estate companies and portfolios, security selection, quantitative portfolio management and risk management.

Joining Welltower and Rising to CEO
Mitra joined Welltower in 2016 as Senior Vice President of Finance and Investments. He later became Senior Vice President of Investments and then Chief Investment Officer in 2018.
In 2020, his career reached a major turning point. Welltower appointed Mitra as its Chief Executive Officer and a member of its Board of Directors, effective October 5, 2020.
Welltower's official profile currently identifies Mitra as its CEO. The company describes him as a leader focused on capital allocation, data science, machine learning and the long-term development of his team.
What Does Welltower Do?
Welltower is a US-based real estate investment trust, or REIT, focused on healthcare infrastructure. Its portfolio includes senior housing, post-acute communities and outpatient medical properties across the United States, Canada and the United Kingdom.
Under Mitra's leadership, the company has continued to emphasise data-driven investment decisions, healthcare real estate and capital deployment.
How Did Mitra Receive an $821 Million Compensation Package?
The headline figure of $821.1 million can be misleading if interpreted as an annual salary. Reports based on company filings indicate that almost all of Mitra's 2025 compensation was connected to stock awards and long-term performance incentives. His reported base salary was around $1.3 million, while stock-based awards accounted for the vast majority of the overall package.
The structure means that the value of the compensation is closely connected to Welltower's future performance and the conditions attached to the awards. Some of the shares are subject to long-term vesting and performance requirements.
