The independence gained by India on August 15, 1947, stands as one of the major historical developments after World War II. Though we gained independence in 1947, we adopted the Constitution of India on January 26, 1950, which is almost two and a half years after freedom. Every year, we celebrate Republic Day on January 26 to commemorate the day India ceased to be a constitutional monarchy.

This year India will be commemorating the 73rd year of being a Republic since 1950 with the theme 'India @75' to recall and honor 75 years of India's independence and the glorious history of its people, culture, and achievements.

This time around, a total of 21 tableaux will be showcased at the Republic Day parade at Rajpath in New Delhi of which 12 will be from States and Union Territories while nine from the various ministries along with the display of our grand military might and spectacle awaited with great enthusiasm and fervor every year on the Republic Day or R-Day.

Republic Day History

The British declared India's independence through the Indian Independence Act, 1947. Though India was declared independent on August 15, it was under constitutional monarchy of King George VI with Earl Mountbatten as the Governor General. This is because the Constitution didn't come into effect.

The Constitution Drafting Committee was created to prepare the permanent constitution with Dr Bhimrao Ramji Ambedkar as a Chairman. The Committee took 2 years 11 months and 17 days to prepare the Constitution of India. The Constitution of India was adopted on November 26, 1949; however, it came into effect on January 26, 1950, which is known as the Republic Day of India.

INC Lahore Session In 1929

Many express a doubt why the Constitution of India came into effect on January 26 when it was adopted on November 26, 1949. There is an interesting reason behind this! In 1929, the Indian National Congress (INC) held its session in Lahore. During this session, INC demanded complete independence from the British. It also started observing the day as Purna Swaraj, independence.

When the Parliament was looking for an appropriate day to bring the Constitution of India into effect, many suggested January 26, on which day the demand for complete independence was adopted.

It is more than 70 years that India gained independence from the British. We should be thankful to the leaders and freedom fighters who shed their blood and brought independence to us. For this reason, India is now standing as one of the fastest growing economies in the world. It is now our responsibility to take it forward and make the country better and bigger.
