Rabindranath Tagore born on May 7, 1861 needs no introduction. He was the first Asian to receive the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1913. Popularly known as 'Gurudev', his famous works are known world-wide including Gitanjali.

- Amar Shonar Bangla, the national anthem of Bangladesh, was written by Tagore.

Tagore's love for education lead to the start of the famous experimental school at Shantiniketan where he tried his Upanishadic ideals of education. Tagore was knighted by the ruling British Government in 1915, but within a few years he resigned the honour as a protest against British policies in India.
