Police Commemoration Day 2021: Know History And Significance Of This Day

Police Commemoration Day is observed to honour the sacrifices of 10 policemen who died on October 21, 1959, in Ladakh during a Chinese military attack.

Every year on October 21st, Police Commemoration Day is observed as a symbol of appreciation for police officers who have sacrificed their lives in the line of duty in defence of the country. On this day in 1959, 10 Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) troops died fighting the Chinese at the Hot Springs in Ladakh. Last year, the country also recognised and honoured those who died fighting the COVID-19 virus, which caused devastation across the country.

History of Police Commemoration Day 2021

In an uneven encounter inside Indian territory on October 21, 1959, ten valiant policemen were killed by the Chinese Army at Hot Springs in Ladakh. As a result, the DGsP/IGsP Conference which took place in 1962 decided to celebrate October 21 as Police Commemoration Day every year in the country to honour the memory of these ten brave officers.

On November 28, 1959, the Chinese troops handed over the bodies of the martyred policemen to India. They were cremated with full police honours in the Hot Springs in north-eastern Ladakh.

Significance of Police Commemoration Day 2021

The day honours the sacrifices of ten police officers who died on October 21 in Ladakh during a Chinese military attack.

The day also honours security personnel who put their lives on risk while performing their jobs for the country and never think about their own lives.

Inauguration of the Museum

Since 2012, the National Police Commemoration Day Parade has been held at the Police Memorial in Chanakyapuri, Delhi. PM Narendra Modi inaugurated India's first national police museum in Delhi on October 15, 2018.

The national police museum depicts and showcases India's central and state police services' history, uniforms, and equipment.
