Significance of Sri Lanka's National Day 2024

Positioned strategically at the crossroads of major shipping routes connecting South Asia, the Far East, Europe, and America, Sri Lanka serves as a pivotal port for shipping lines and airfreight services. Its geographical location holds significance for India's security, situated centrally in maritime trade routes linking West and East Asia, Africa, the Arab world, and Eastern regions. The historical separation of Sri Lanka from India can be attributed to the absence of a unified nation called India before British colonial rule, with the Indian subcontinent consisting of various states governed by princes and kings. Sri Lanka's strategic importance continues in the context of India's national security, highlighted by the collaborative initiative where the Sri Lankan government invited India to undertake and fund the Hambantota port project.
