Muzaffarnagar Declares School, College Holiday from August 3–10 for Kanwar Yatra
The Muzaffarnagar district administration has announced the closure of all schools and colleges from August 3 to August 10, 2026, in view of the annual Kanwar Yatra. The decision has been taken to facilitate the smooth movement of lakhs of Kanwariyas passing through the district and to ensure public safety during one of the largest religious pilgrimages in North India.

The holiday has been declared as thousands of devotees carrying holy Ganga water from Haridwar continue to travel through Muzaffarnagar before offering Jalabhishek at Shiva temples on the auspicious Mondays of the holy month of Shravan. The administration expects a significant increase in the number of pilgrims during this period and has therefore implemented extensive security and traffic management measures.
Schools and Colleges to Remain Closed
According to the district administration, all government, aided, and private schools and colleges in Muzaffarnagar will remain closed between August 3 and August 10, 2026. The closure is intended to minimize inconvenience caused by heavy traffic restrictions and ensure the safety of students, teachers, and commuters.
Parents and students have been advised to stay updated through official announcements issued by the district administration and their respective educational institutions regarding reopening dates and any revised academic schedules.
Security Tightened Across the District
To manage the large influx of Kanwar pilgrims, authorities have significantly strengthened security arrangements across Muzaffarnagar.
Additional police personnel have been deployed at major Shiva temples and important Kanwar routes. Separate queues have been created for women devotees to ensure smooth darshan, while anti-slip mats and barricades have been installed to improve crowd management and reduce the risk of accidents.
The administration has also deployed Anti-Romeo squads at prominent temples to enhance the safety of women devotees during the pilgrimage.
Traffic and Public Arrangements
With the number of Kanwariyas increasing each day, officials have implemented phased traffic diversions across the district to ensure uninterrupted movement of pilgrims and emergency services.
Surveillance has also been intensified at sensitive locations, and authorities are continuously monitoring crowd movement through CCTV cameras and police patrols.
Residents have been advised to avoid non-essential travel on Kanwar routes and follow traffic advisories issued by local authorities.
Restrictions Along Kanwar Routes
Apart from educational institutions, the district administration has also ordered the closure of meat shops and restaurants located along Kanwar Yatra routes until August 12, 2026. The measure has been introduced to maintain the sanctity of the religious procession and facilitate the smooth conduct of the yatra.
The Kanwar Yatra 2026 commenced on July 30 with the beginning of the Shravan month and will conclude on August 11, 2026.
Students, parents, and residents are advised to regularly check official district administration notifications for updates regarding school reopening, traffic diversions, and other public advisories during the Kanwar Yatra period.
