India's private space sector achieved a defining milestone on July 18, 2026, when Hyderabad-based Skyroot Aerospace successfully launched Vikram-1, the country's first privately developed orbital launch vehicle.

Keerthi Sri's Role in the Vikram-1 Mission

The mission, named Mission Aagaman, lifted off from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre, Sriharikota, marking India's entry into an elite group of nations where private companies have independently placed rockets into orbit.

While the launch itself created history, it also brought attention to the young engineers who played a crucial role in making the mission a success. Among them is Keerthi Sri, a Gen-Z aerospace engineer whose expertise in avionics and electrical integration contributed significantly to the Vikram-1 mission.

Keerthi Sri's Educational Background

Keerthi Sri completed her Bachelor of Technology (B.Tech) in Electrical, Electronics and Communication Engineering (EECE) from Gayatri Vidya Parishad College of Engineering in 2022. During her undergraduate studies, she developed a strong foundation in electrical systems, embedded electronics, communication networks, and control engineering-subjects that later became central to her career in aerospace technology.

Her academic training equipped her with practical knowledge in electrical circuit design, signal processing, automation, and systems integration. These skills proved invaluable when she entered the defence and aerospace sector shortly after graduation.

Early Career at Larsen & Toubro Defence

Before joining Skyroot Aerospace, Keerthi Sri worked with Larsen & Toubro (L&T) Defence in Pune. At L&T Defence, she contributed to the development of missile launcher automation systems and control technologies for projects associated with the Indian Army and the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO).

Her experience in defence engineering helped her gain expertise in high-reliability electrical systems, automation, and mission-critical hardware, preparing her for more complex responsibilities in India's growing private space industry.

Role at Skyroot Aerospace

Keerthi Sri currently serves as an Avionics Electrical Integration and Test Engineer at Skyroot Aerospace. Within the Vikram-1 programme, she was responsible for designing, integrating, and validating the rocket's electrical architecture.

Often described as the "neurologist of the rocket," her work focused on ensuring uninterrupted communication between the rocket's onboard computers, sensors, guidance systems, and other electronic subsystems.

Her key responsibilities included:

  • Designing the rocket's electrical wiring harness.
  • Integrating avionics systems with launch vehicle hardware.
  • Testing electrical circuits and communication networks.
  • Verifying subsystem compatibility before launch.
  • Supporting the final integration and launch-readiness checks for Mission Aagaman.

These tasks were essential to ensuring that every onboard system functioned accurately during launch, stage separation, and orbital insertion.

Vikram-1 Creates History

The successful launch of Vikram-1 marked a landmark achievement for India's commercial space ecosystem. Developed entirely by Skyroot Aerospace, the launch vehicle incorporates several advanced indigenous technologies, including a full carbon composite structure and a 3D-printed liquid rocket engine, making it one of the most technologically advanced private rockets developed in India.

The rocket is capable of carrying payloads of up to 350 kilograms into Low Earth Orbit (LEO) at an altitude of around 450 kilometres. During its maiden mission, Vikram-1 successfully deployed multiple customer payloads into orbit, including Skyroot's Scope satellite and Graha Space's Solar S3 payload, demonstrating its operational capability.

A Young Team Driving India's Space Future

One of the most inspiring aspects of Mission Aagaman is the age of the team behind it. According to Skyroot Aerospace CEO Pawan Chandana, the average age of the engineers working on the mission was just 28 years. Keerthi Sri represents a new generation of Indian engineers who are transforming ambitious ideas into technological achievements.

After the successful launch, Keerthi reflected on the journey with the words:

"We dreamed it, we built it, and finally we achieved it."
