Controversy has engulfed India after Prime Minister Narendra Modi's government used the name Bharat on official invitations, leaving many wondering if the name will be changed.
Droupadi Murmu is referred to as "President of Bharat" rather than "President of India" in dinner invitations extended to visitors attending the Group of 20 (G20) meeting.
The world's most populous country is known as India and Bharat in its constitution. Another name for the country is Hindustan, which means "land of the Hindus" in Urdu. Officially and informally, the three names are interchangeable.
However, India is the most often used name in the globe.

Why has 'Bharat' sparked debate?
Government critics have accused Modi's government and his Hindu nationalist BJP of planning to change the name to simply Bharat since the G20 invitations were sent.
The name is derived from a Sanskrit phrase found in literature written approximately 2,000 years ago. It alludes to an uncertain realm, Bharatavarsa, which extended beyond India's current borders and may have included what is now Indonesia.
The BJP has previously renamed cities and locations associated with the Mughal and colonial periods. For example, the Mughal Garden in the presidential residence in New Delhi was renamed Amrit Udyan last year. According to critics, the new names are an attempt to remove the Mughals from Indian history, who were Muslims who controlled the subcontinent for about 300 years. According to Roop Rekha Verma, a philosophy professor and former vice chancellor at Lucknow University in the northern state of Uttar Pradesh, the controversy stems from Modi's government's intolerance.
"We have seen a consistent disregard for the constitution and laws." If the Supreme Court issues an order that the government does not approve of, it is altered," Verma told Turkey's Anadolu Agency. "I can't predict what will happen next, but I believe that the opposition has now set out to remove the name India as a result of their alliance."

What does the opposition say? Will the names of these Parties Change?
Opposition leaders have questioned the government's motivation and said that the 'Union of States' is under attack. Jairam Ramesh, general secretary of the Congress, took to his microblogging website to invoke Article 1 of the Constitution and accuse the government of undermining the concept of a Union of States.
"So the news is true," he wrote. Rashtrapati Bhawan has issued an invitation to a G20 luncheon on September 9th in the name of 'President of Bharat' rather than the usual 'President of India'." "Now, Article 1 of the Constitution can read: 'Bharat, that was India, shall be a Union of States," he claimed. But now, even this "Union of States" is being attacked."
Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal challenged a "flustered" BJP whether it would change the name of Bharat if the opposition alliance INDIA renamed itself 'Bharat'. "I have no official word on this." I've heard some rumors. What is causing this? It is claimed that this is being done because we have created an alliance known as INDIA... The country belongs to its 140 million citizens, not to a single political party. "Will they change the name of Bharat if the INDIA alliance rechristens itself Bharat?" Kejriwal asked. "What a farce this is!" This is our land. "We have a long history," he remarked.
In response to the controversy, Tamil Nadu CM and DMK president MK Stalin slammed the BJP, stating, "BJP promised to TRANSFORM India, but all we got was a name change after 9 years." "After Non-BJP forces joined to dethrone the fascist BJP administration, rightly naming their alliance #INDIA," he said, "now the BJP wants to replace 'India' for 'Bharat.' The BJP vowed to TRANSFORM India, but all we got after 9 years was a name change! The BJP appears to be unnerved by a single term named India because they recognize the power of unity within the opposition. 'India' will drive the BJP out of office during the elections!"
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee questioned the need to "suddenly use only Bharat" when referring to India in an official communique. "I heard that the name India is being altered. Bharat is written on the G20 invitation that was sent out in the name of the honorable president. In English, we refer to India and the "Indian Constitution," but in Hindi, we refer to "Bharat ka Samvidhan." "What is new in this?" we all remark. She stated. "There is nothing new to do. The rest of the world knows us as India. "What happened so suddenly that the country's name needs to be changed?" She inquired.
According to Supriya Shrinate, Congress's Chairperson of Social Media and Digital Platforms, "Article 1 of the Constitution states that we will be known by both the name India and the name Bharat." The reality is that the PM is terrified of INDIA, which is why, in order to oppose us, he is willing to change our country's name. Who changes their motherland's name? That is exactly what the Prime Minister is attempting.
You may despise us (the India coalition), regard us as political adversaries, but why wage war against India?...The problems that afflict India also afflict Bharat..." "We've never seen invitations going out in the name of 'President of Bharat', it's always been 'President of India' or Prime Minister of India," DMK MP Kanimozhi said of the 'President of Bharat' on G20 summit dinner invitation. Why did they do this now? What is the purpose of it? What is the political context? It has been in the Constitution for many years, but no one has used it. The RSS chairman has stated that the name of India should be changed. Reading this after that raises a slew of concerns. Is RSS dictating the agenda for the entire country? ...We have no idea why a special session of Parliament has been summoned. We have no idea what the agenda is..."
