History of Good Governance Day 2023

Good Governance Day 2023 is commemorated in honor of the birth anniversary of the former Prime Minister, Atal Bihari Vajpayee. On December 23, 2014, both Atal Bihari Vajpayee, the former prime minister, and Pandit Madan Mohan Malaviya were conferred with the Bharat Ratna, India's highest civilian honor. In response, the newly-elected Prime Minister Narendra Modi proclaimed December 25 as Good Governance Day.
Atal Bihari Vajpayee served as India's prime minister on three occasions. His inaugural term in 1996 was brief, lasting only 13 days. The second term spanned from 1999 to 2004, with a total of thirteen months from March 1998 to April 1999. He made his debut in the Rajya Sabha in 1962 and emerged victorious in seven Lok Sabha elections. In 2015, Mr. Vajpayee was honored with the Bharat Ratna, India's highest civilian award.

The Importance of Good Governance Day in 2023

This day provides an opportunity to educate individuals about the government's initiatives, assess the obstacles to good governance, and provide enhanced public access to various government schemes and programmes through awareness campaigns. The government launched the Good Governance Index (GGI) in 2019. It is a tool that is based on several indicators.
