He takes over from Subodh Kumar Singh of Uttar Pradesh.

Kharola, a 1985 batch IAS officer from the Karnataka Cadre, was appointed head of Air India in November 2017. He also served as managing director of Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation.

In 2022, Pradeep Singh was transferred to the India Trade Promotion Organisation (ITPO) as chairman. He has been serving there since then and now holds additional charge of the NTA until a permanent appointment is made. Kharola's career is marked by significant achievements and recognition.
