Delhi has a new Chief Minister, and it's none other than Atishi Marlena, a senior leader of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP). Arvind Kejriwal, AAP's leader who was recently released from jail, proposed her name during a meeting with the party's MLAs. Kejriwal announced his resignation on Sunday, stating that he would only return to office once he had received a "certificate of honesty" from the citizens of Delhi.

Atishi Marlena was born on June 8, 1981, in Delhi into an academically inclined family. Her parents, Vijay Singh and Tripta Vahi, are professors at Delhi University, which undoubtedly influenced her intellectual pursuits. She completed her early schooling at Springdale School in Delhi, known for its focus on social values and academic rigor.

After completing high school, Atishi pursued a Bachelor's degree in History from the prestigious St. Stephen's College, University of Delhi. Her thirst for knowledge and her ambition led her to Oxford University, where she earned a Master's degree in History in 2003 under the Chevening Scholarship. Later, in 2005, she attended Magdalen College, Oxford, as a Rhodes Scholar, further honing her skills and broadening her perspectives on education and governance.

Political Journey and Rise to Prominence:

Atishi began her political career in January 2013 when she joined the Aam Aadmi Party, which was emerging as a major force in Indian politics during the anti-corruption movement. She quickly became known for her activism and dedication, gaining attention in 2015 when she participated in the Jal Satyagraha protest in Khandwa, Madhya Pradesh, alongside AAP leader Alok Aggarwal.

Despite a setback in 2019 when she contested the Lok Sabha elections from East Delhi and lost to BJP's Gautam Gambhir by approximately 4.77 lakh votes, Atishi remained resilient and determined. Her efforts paid off in the 2020 Delhi Assembly elections, where she won from the Kalkaji constituency by defeating BJP candidate Dharambir Singh by 11,422 votes. This victory solidified her place in Delhi's political landscape and paved the way for her ascent into the higher echelons of the AAP government.

Cabinet Role and Leadership:

Following her electoral success, Atishi took on several significant roles within the Delhi government. After the resignations of Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia and Health Minister Satyendra Jain, Atishi was entrusted with key portfolios such as Education, PWD, and Finance. Her contributions to education, in particular, have been transformative, as she spearheaded reforms that improved the quality of public education in Delhi. From infrastructure development to innovative curricula like the "Happiness Curriculum," Atishi's initiatives have set a new benchmark for public education in India.

Her political influence continued to grow, and in 2022-23, she chaired the Public Accounts Committee, playing a vital role in ensuring transparency and accountability in government operations. At the same time, she remained actively involved in committees focusing on women and child welfare as well as minority welfare initiatives.

Atishi's full name is Atishi Marlena Singh, with her middle name, "Marlena," being a portmanteau of Marx and Lenin, a nod to her parents' leftist leanings. However, in 2018, as she transitioned into a more prominent political role, she decided to drop her surname, choosing to be known simply as Atishi. This decision was seen as a move to focus more on her work and public persona rather than her family background or political ideology.
