Ashwin Ramaswami, a young and dynamic second-generation Indian-American, is making headlines as he announces his candidacy for the State Senate in District 48 of Georgia. This marks a significant milestone as Ramaswami becomes the first Indian-American from Generation Z to aspire for a prominent role in either a state or federal legislature in the United States. His campaign is built on a foundation of community service, equality, and innovation, aiming to bring a fresh perspective to the political landscape.
Ramaswami, who graduated from Stanford in 2021 with a degree in computer science, is currently furthering his education at Georgetown University Law Center. Running as a Democrat, he seeks to succeed the incumbent Republican Shawn Still, who faces indictment for his participation in the January 6 insurrection at the US Capitol.

A Trailblazer for Generation Z and Indian Americans
If victorious, Ramaswami will break several barriers. Not only would he become Georgia's first Gen Z State Senator, but he would also be the inaugural state legislator in Georgia to possess both a computer science and a law degree. His election would also symbolize a historic milestone as the first Indian American to serve in the Georgia State legislature.
Journey of Ashwin Ramaswami
Ramaswami's journey is deeply rooted in his heritage. His parents migrated to the US from Tamil Nadu in the 1990s, and he was raised amidst a blend of Indian and American cultures. This unique upbringing has fostered a deep connection with Indian culture and philosophy, with Ramaswami actively participating in yoga, meditation, and teaching Baal Vihara to younger students.
With a career that spans working with nonprofits, startups, and small businesses, Ramaswami has leveraged technology to serve the public interest and foster job creation. His expertise also extends to election security and cybersecurity, where his efforts have contributed to safeguarding the integrity of the 2020 and 2022 elections.
A Voice for the Youth and Beyond
Ramaswami's candidacy is driven by a belief in the capacity of Generation Z to enact positive change. Despite acknowledging the electoral challenges faced by younger candidates, such as biases towards wealthier and older individuals, he remains optimistic. Ramaswami’s campaign is a testament to his conviction that young voices, when given a platform, can advocate effectively for the interests of all community members, regardless of their background.
In championing the cause of equitable opportunities and leveraging his unique blend of technical and legal expertise, Ramaswami embodies the aspirations of both his generation and the wider Indian-American community. His groundbreaking campaign not only signifies a step forward in representing diverse voices within American politics but also serves as an inspiration for young Indians and Indian-Americans striving to make an impact through public service.
