Akshaya Tritiya, also known as Akha Teej is one of the myriad festivals celebrated in India. It is believed to be one of the most favourable days in the Hindu calendar and is a highly auspicious and sacred day for Hindu and Jain communities. It is believed that all the activities including spiritual or material performed on this auspicious day bring desired results.
Akshaya Tritiya is celebrated on the Tritiya Tithi (third day) of the Shukla Paksha of the Indian month of Vaishakha (April-May). On this day, both Sun and the moon are said to be at their planetary best. The word 'Akshaya' is a Sanskrit term that means 'the one that never diminishes' or 'the eternal one.' This year Akshaya Tritiya falls on May 14, 2021.
Significance Of Akshaya Tritiya
According to Hindu mythology, Akshaya Tritiya is a day when the 'Treta Yuga' (the age of three or triads) began. Mostly, Akshaya Tritiya and Parashurama Jayanti fall on the same day but depending on the Tritiya Tithi timings Parashurama Jayanti may fall one day before the Akshaya Tritiya. Lord Parashurama is the sixth incarnation of Lord Vishnu.
On this auspicious day, people like to buy gold or silver items in the belief that buying precious metals brings prosperity and good luck. People also do charity and distribute grains, clothes, and other items among the underprivileged to receive the blessings of Lord Vishnu.
