10 Tips To Maintain A Better Work-Life Balance

By Shatavisha Charkravorty

There are two important aspects of a person's life - viz his personal life and his professional. At any given point in a person's career, it is obvious that these two aspects will run simultaneously. While it is a good practice to keep one's personal and professional life segregated and separate, it is not always possible to keep it that way. What happens in your personal life is bound to affect your career and vice versa. It should be our endeavour to minimize this interference.

While working on minimizing this interference, it should be borne in mind that out of these two aspects none is superior over the other. One cannot have a good personal life unless he has money to sustain the same. The money is something that his work life will give him. Similarly a person cannot be happy with money alone. He needs ways and means to spend that money and that is the only thing that will make him happy. Hence striking a balance between one's personal and professional life is very important. Here is a list of tips that will help one to achieve this balance.

1. Prioritize Your Work

While one cannot say that his professional life is more important than his personal (or vice versa), there will be certain tasks in each of these areas that will be more important than the rest. It is very important to be able to identify those and do justice to them. Remember it is not the number of things that you do that matters, how you do each of them is all the way more important.

2. Structure Your Work

Once you know which of your tasks are more important than the other, it is important that you structure them well so that as the day progresses, you know exactly what to do when. By grouping smaller tasks together you will be able to complete more amount of work in lesser amount of time. Also if you have to run errands, by grouping your work together, you will be able to finish more amount of personal and work errands in way lesser time than what you thought was physically possible.

3. Concentrate On One Thing At A Time

We understand that there might be a host of things that demand your attention at the moment. However, thinking about all of them at the same time will lead you nowhere. In fact thinking about some other task while you are actually in the process of implementing something else, will make you not be able to do justice to either of them.

4. Make Use Of Annual Holidays To Recharge

Do not forget that you are a human being and that your body needs rest as well. We understand that it is not possible for you to give your body the due rest that it deserves on normal days (because of work commitments) and weekends go by in meeting the personal duties and responsibilities. In this situation the best thing that you can do is to use the annual holidays that you get to relax yourself and prepare your mind and body to take on then challenges of a hectic life.

5. Indulge In Hobbies

If you feel that you are finding it difficult to strike a balance between your personal and professional life, the best thing that you can do is to indulge in a hobby. Saying you are too busy to have a hobby is no excuse. By having a hobby you actually treat yourself to something you enjoy and the mind and body repays you back by being more productive.

6. Find Out What Is It That Only You Can Do

There are some tasks or chores in your personal as well as professional life that only you can do and no one else can substitute it for you. It is very important to be able to identify those and treat them with utmost importance. It must be borne in mind that because of you someone else's work should not get hampered.

7. Take Breaks During The Work Day

Remember that you are a human being and to be able to perform to the best of your abilities, you need to give yourself the breaks that you deserve. The human brain has a fixed attention span and tampering with the same on your part will not lead to any productive results. Hence irrespective of whether the work you are doing is personal or professional in nature, make sure that you do take breaks in between. This will not just increase your productivity but will also make you feel good about yourself.

8. Do Not Be Too Harsh On Yourself

While striking the balance between your personal and professional life it is evident that you will make mistakes. Do not feel guilty about the same. Rather it is a good practice to take the blame for our mistakes with grace and then go on without thinking too much about the same. This will ensure that you do not repeat the mistake without being too harsh on yourself.

9. Make Sure That You Eat And Drink Well

It is an undeniable fact that the modern life is challenging; more so with all the personal - professional balance that one needs to strike. In such a scenario, the mind often gets tired very easily. To prevent it from happening, what we can do is to ensure that there is no dearth of nutrition to the brain. This is achieved by ensuring that one drinks at least 1.5 litres of water every day. Three wholesome meals must be consumed by an adult.

10. Use Technology To Your Benefit

You and I are lucky enough to be born in an era of technology. Hence it is our duty to make the most out of it. Be it using the kitchen appliances or working from your mobile while commuting to and from work, you will be amazed to see the role technology can play in enabling you to achieve the work - life balance that you had always dreamt of.
