As per SASCOF report, this year's winter may witness warmer nights in most parts of India despite a La Nina over the Pacific Ocean.

South Asian climate is influenced by both tropical (Oct-Dec) and temperate mid-latitude (Dec-Feb) circulation systems during the winter months.

What is a La Nina Effect?

La Nina is an oceanic and atmospheric phenomenon that is the colder counterpart of El Nino, as part of the broader El Nino-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) climate pattern.
During a La Nina period, the sea surface temperature across the eastern equatorial part of the central Pacific Ocean is lower than normal by 3 to 5°C.
According to the Australian Bureau of Meteorology, La Nina phenomenon is occurring for the third year in a row in the Pacific Ocean.

What is El Nino Effect?

El Nino also has a strong effect on marine life off the Pacific coast. El Nino causes the Pacific jet stream to move south and spread further east. During winter, this leads to wetter conditions than usual in the Southern U.S. and warmer and drier conditions in the North.
