IIT Delhi Introduces New Course, To Offer BTech In Energy Engineering

The new B. Tech. program will begin from the next academic session and the students can take admission to this course through JEE Advanced. The department will provide educational programs in the field of energy.

The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi has introduced a new course in B. Tech. in Energy Engineering. The new B. Tech. program will begin from the next academic session and the students can take admission to this course through JEE Advanced. The IIT-Delhi campus will soon set up a Department of Energy Science and Engineering under which the course will be offered.

The new Department of Energy has been created by expanding the 45-year-old Centre for Energy Studies (CES). The board of the Institute has given a nod to transform the Centre for Energy Studies into the Department of Energy Science and Engineering.

In addition to the three existing M. Tech. programs offered by the Centre for Energy Studies, the new department will offer an undergraduate degree program in B. Tech. in Energy Engineering which will begin from the academic session 2021-2022 with an intake of 40 students who have qualified JEE (Advanced).

CES Head, Prof. KA Subramanian said, "Manpower needs to be nurtured with the necessary vision and foresight to holistically respond to various energy and environment challenges flexibly. The B. Tech. program in Energy Engineering is designed to provide students with the knowledge and skills required to address the challenges of the energy sector facing humanity - reducing energy consumption, supply quality, and reliability as well as consumption efficiency, de-carbonisation, lowering energy supply cost, etc. "

The B. Tech. course will provide students with an alternative wide basket in the field of energy as it aims to prepare the next-generation industry leaders to contribute to the energy transition initiatives by major industries, disciplines, and all other stakeholders. In addition to highly unique field-specific skills, students are expected to have other qualifications such as environmental awareness and in-depth understanding of the concepts of sustainability, said the IIT.

The new department aims to achieve its seventh sustainable development goal of meeting the energy needs of the environment at a sustainable price, and contribute towards energy transition at the global level, said the IIT in an official statement.

The department will provide appropriate educational programs in the field of energy vacancies to prepare the required manpower at all levels, attract the best faculty, students and staff and provide a platform for active and effective collaboration between faculty colleagues in the institute and with other institutions.
