AICTE And DRDO Introduces MTech Course In Defence Technology

The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) has introduced a new MTech course in Defence Technology. The All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) will teach the course with the goal of providing learners with the essential theoretical and experimental knowledge, skill, and aptitude in the fields of defence technology.

The students will undertake their main thesis work in DRDO laboratories, defence PSUs, and enterprises as part of the programme. These courses will be provided in both online and offline forms by any AICTE accredited institutes or universities, IITs, NITs, or private engineering institutes. For undertaking this course, the institutes will be assisted by the Institute of Defence Scientists and Technologists (IDST).

Combat Technology, Naval Technology, Aero Technology, Directed Energy Technology, Communication Systems and Sensors, and High Energy Materials Technology are the six specialised streams of the programme.

Dr. G Satheesh Reddy, in his speech, complimented the DRDO, AICTE, and companies for creating the PG programme. He asserted that such a specialised course will help the defence industry to develop a huge pool of skilled workers. He urged business leaders to show their support for the programme and to provide opportunities for the kids.

The course will not only develop a trained workforce pool in defence technology, but it will also have a spin-off advantage in the form of new defence startups and entrepreneurs, stated Prof Anil D Sahasrabudhe, chairperson of the AICTE. He underlined the importance of connecting research to everyday life because it is essential for the human psyche.

Meanwhile, the AICTE has approved the offering of engineering degrees in regional languages by colleges. From the start of the new academic year 2020-21, courses will be provided in as many as five languages: Hindi, Marathi, Tamil, Telugu, and Bengali. The AICTE is generating online and offline content as well as translating courses in 11 various languages.
