Zakir Husain Delhi College (ZHDC) was formerly known as Zakir Husain College, Anglo Arabic College, and Delhi College. The college was established in 1924 and became one of its constituent degree colleges of Delhi University in 1929.
The college is affiliated to University of Delhi and recognized by the University Grants Commission (UGC) under section 2(f) & 12(B) on May 8, 2014, under Act, 1956. It was accredited by National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) with "A" Grade on November 5, 2016.
It is the only constituent college of the University of Delhi that has the special honor and privilege of having the Prime Minister of India as the head of Zakir Husain Memorial Trust.
In the beginning, the college was established as a Madrasa by the father of the first Nizam of Hyderabad, Ghaziuddin Khan in 1709. Later in 1824, the East India Company launched the project of providing Anglo Oriental education in North India.
The Madarsa was converted into what the English perceived as a college for ‘oriental’ studies with J.H. Taylor as its secretary and superintendent. A budget of INR 3000 per annum was allotted to the college. The college started admitting students in 1825 and it was open to members of all communities.
From the year 1975, the college is managed by the Zakir Husain Memorial Trust and it was renamed Zakir Husain Delhi College. It shifted to the new campus outside the Turkman Gate in 1986.
At present, the college offers co-educational undergraduate & postgraduate courses in Arts, Science, & Commerce stream with various optional specializations. It also offers add-on certificate courses.
ZHDC follows the syllabus prescribed by the University of Delhi and adheres to University guidelines regarding the number of lectures and tutorials allocated to different courses.
