Vardhman Mahavir Medical College (VMMC) was established at Safdarjung Hospital in 2001 by the Govt. of India. The inauguration was done by the then Honourable Prime Minister Sh. Atal Bihari Vajpayee on December 17, 2001, in presence of Sh. L.K.Advani, Sh. C.P. Thakur and Founder Principal Dr Jagdish Prasad.

The College building was dedicated to the Nation by the Vice President Sh. M. Hamid Ansari on 20th Nov. 2007 in the presence of Honourable Health Minister Dr. Anbumani Ramadoss. The first batch of MBBS students was admitted in February, 2002. Post-graduate courses (MD/MS) in clinical subjects were running at Safdarjung Hospital even before the establishment of VMMC. The (MD/MS) course in Pre and Para clinical subjects were started in year 2011. Over the period of time, the numbers of MD/MS seats have been increased. The College also is running super specialization (Mch/DM).

VMMC is affiliated to Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University; New Delhi. Over a decade the VMMC College has established itself as a prominent medical institution in India. (A Medical marvel by as India Today Aspire August 2013.) 

Safdarjung Hospital is the largest hospital under the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare and is well known for its quality of services to all strata of society since pre-independence days. As on date, it has more than 1550 beds including bassinets. It has an annual OPD attendance of more than 10 lakh patients. Vardhman Mahavir Medical College in association with Safdarjung Hospital provides modern facilities in all kinds of investigations and patient care. This medical college & hospital has speciality and super speciality departments like Dept. of Cardiac Surgery (CTVS), Cardiology, Neurology, Urology, Nephrology, Respiratory Medicine, Burns & Plastic, Paediatric Surgery, Gastroenterology, etc. It has  modern facilities for angiography, angioplasty, valve replacement and repairs, coronary artery bypass grafting, lithotripsy, sleep laboratory, endoscopies, arthroscopies, video EEG, dialysis, spiral CT, MRI, automated blood Test analyzers etc.

The Office of the Principal is located on the ground floor of the College building. For all matters related to admission, examination, fee, certificates, degrees, hostel, scholarship etc, the Academic Section which is also on the ground floor, can be contacted.

The college was recognised by the Medical Council of India (MCI), New Delhi. It is included in the World Directory of Medical Schools and the Avicenna Directory of Medicine.

Apart from this college, School of Nursing is also a constituent unit under this college which was established in Safdarjang Hospital 1960 for conducting a course on Diploma in General Nursing & Midwifery, of 3½ yrs duration.

The School of Nursing is upgraded to College of Nursing in the year 2008 with an annual intake of 100 students. B.Sc.(H) Nursing programme is of 4 years duration. The college is affiliated to Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University, Delhi & recognised by Indian Nursing Council & Delhi Nursing Council.

MISSION

The undergraduate student passing out of Vardhman Mahavir Medical College should:

1.   Understand critically the role of health as well as his/her own role as health care provider in developing a community, a nation and the mankind.

2.   Learn all aspects of National Health Policies and devote himself/herself to its practical implementations.

3.   Diagnose and manage common as well as emerging health problems of the individual     and the community, appropriate to his/her position as a member of any health care delivery team.

4.   Determine socio-economic, psychosocial, cultural and environmental factors influencing health and disease.

5.   Best use the available resources and knowledge to combat the unmet need of health care at various levels.

6.   Apply appropriate technology for diagnosis and develop habits of Rational Use of Drugs.

7.   Should practice medicine keeping in view the religious faith and socio-cultural milieu of the individual or the community.

8.   Be competent to practice holistic medicine encompassing preventive, promotive, curative and rehabilitative aspects of common and emerging diseases.                                                                                                           

9.   Realize his/her limitations and refer patients to the next level of care as and when appropriate and to the advantage of the patient’s health.

10. Develop ability for continued self-learning and carry out research in all traditional and emerging forms to explore the depth and boundaries of life and its processes to enrich health and alleviate human sufferings.

11. Treat patients with respect and dignity maintaining highest standards of ethical practice of medicine. 

12. Develop an attitude for standardization of methods, development of protocols, quality in health care delivery and medical management.

13. Demonstrate an open attitude towards alternative systems of medicine to make health care delivery scientific and sustainable in all spheres of society.

14. Learn all aspects of emergency medicine and disaster management and beprepared all the time to face any such incidences or calamities.

15. Be proficient in Medico-legal aspect and hospital waste management.

16. Use appropriate technology to store, protect, use and disseminate data, information and knowledge effectively and efficiently.

17. Acquire basic management skills in the area of health care delivery.

18. Develop skills for providing information, education and communication to individual on one hand and with peers, members of the health team and the community on the other.

19. Have personal characteristics and attitudes required for professional life such as personal integrity, responsibility, dependability and empathy.
