Vels University was established in 1992.

which was formally known as the Vels Institute of Science, Technology and Advanced Studies and is part of Vels Group of Institutes.

The university attained its university status in 2008 by the Ministry of Human Resource Development, Govt of India.

The university aims at innovative syllabi and new courses and hence the revision of curricula is a continuous and an on-going process. The revision is initiated by the faculty depending on the requirement and approved by Board of Studies of the concerned school or department.

Vel University endeavours is to provide relevant academic programs of practical and real world knowledge is order to empower the students to achieve professional and personal success in today’s competitive, diverse and dynamic society by providing excellent research-support facilities, faculty and infrastructure, collaborative research fostering a culture of assessment, accountability academic integrity and lifelong learning.

Vels Group of Institutes has four campuses located at Pallavaram within the city of Chennai. The campus is surrounded by an inspiring panoramic view of nature with green fields and the Pallavaram hills. The School of Maritime Studies and School of Physiotherapy are located at Thalambur near Navalur on old Mahabalipuram road.
