Established in 1971, with the initiative of the Health Minister of Delhi, University College of Medical Sciences (UCMS) - University of Delhi is a constituent college of University of Delhi. In collaboration with Guru Teg Bahadur Hospital, which is a teaching hospital, the college conducts various paramedical and medical courses.
Self-affiliated with University of Delhi, New Delhi, University College of Medical Sciences (UCMS) - University of Delhi, is approved and recognised by the Medical Council of India (MCI), New Delhi.
The college came up with the initiative of the health ministry as the goal was to provide paramedical and medical education to all eligible students. At that time, even after the presence of two well-known medical colleges, medical education was denied to many eligible students as a result of the dearth of medical colleges.
On the North Campus of the University of Delhi in a makeshift Department of Chemistry, the classes for the new college were started in 1971. The practicals were conducted at the Lala Lajpat Rai Memorial Medical College.
Very soon, the institute was shifted to the Safdarjung Hospital in South Delhi. The institute was shifted to its current location in 1986 and its association with the Guru Teg Bahadur Hospital started.
India Today Magazine ranked it at number five and Outlook India ranked it at number thirteen among all the medical colleges in India. The institute can also be given credit for being the first medical college in India to start a Medical Humanities Group.
In 2011, the institute, for the medical students in India arranged the first 'Theatre of the Oppressed' workshop. Based on the quality research conducted by UCMS and the number of publications in PubMed indexed journals, the institute has a college ranking of seventh.
Currently, the institute provides undergraduate, postgraduate, doctorate and add-on fellowship courses in medical streams.
The institute has tie-ups with several top institutions and universities across the globe and conducts research partnerships and exchange programmes with them.
Students seeking admission to the institute should qualify in the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) and All India Post Graduate Medical Entrance Examination (AIPGMEE) and they should have scored at least 60% marks in the class 12 board examinations.
