Tripura University (TU), West Tripura was established in 1987.

The university was formed under the tripura university act, 2006. Later on 2nd july, 2007.

Tripura University is the main Central Government University of the Indian State of Tripura. Tripura University provides post-graduate courses in sixteen subjects while the various Departments, Directorates and centres with it provide 38 degree courses. All twenty four general and technical courses, within the state, are affiliated with Tripura University. Situated on the sprawling 75 acres (300,000 M2) of land, donated by the State Government, at Suryamaninagar, ten kilometers south of Agartala this University is constantly aiming to deliver a great place of education and knowledge.

The University established under Tripura University Act in the Assembly in 1987 which is the backbone of the University and there on is always continously advancing in "Pursuit of Excellence".

It was converted to a central university. it was established to fulfill the dreams of the local people of this region and for the cause of development of the tribal and backward people.

It is the most important university in the north eastern state of Tripura. Educational jurisdiction of the university is spread across tripura. Initially housed at college Tilla, the university campus has now been moved to Suryamaninagar.

OBJECTIVE

The Tripura University Act envisages that the objective of the University shall not be 'to disseminate and advance knowledge by providing instructional and research facilities" in the state of areas of contemporary relevance to the society and the country (with the motto "Pursuit of Excellence") but to make special provisions for studies in tribal life and cultural and to introduce vocational subjects with a view to provide employment opportunities to the students. The Act specifically enjoins the University to organisz specialized diploma, degree and post-graduate courses in certain subjects. Keeping that spirit of the Act in consideration, Tripura University started its journery in 1987.

 PRESENT

There are also a large number of colleges affiliated to the University. The number of affiliated colleges at present is 52 among which there are 27 General Degree Colleges, 19 Professional Degree Colleges, 2 Technical Colleges & 4 Polytechnic Institutes. At present the total enrollment strenth in the Affiliated Colleges in 38114. The Univeristy is running various courses under Science and Arts & Commerce Faculty. A total number of 42 Courses run under the University, which includes Certificate Courses, Under Graduate, Post Graduate Diploma and Post Graduate studies. In addition to these, Ph.D. programmes are also offered in 33 subjects. Despite several odds at its inception, the University has been trying to overcome various difficulties with the cooperation of the State Government, the UGC, The NEC and the Planning Commission of India and many other authorities. The autonomous character of the University is not interfered in any way by the State Government. The relationship between the State Government and the University is very cordial and the former, despite severe economics constraints, encourages the latter to formulate new ideas of development in the larger interest of the State, particularly for the cause of the tribal and backward people. Tripura University has been converted to a Central University w.e.f 2nd July, 2007 Under the Tripura University Act, 2006 as enacted by the Parlliament.
