Established in July 1999, WB National University of Juridical Sciences is also known as WBNUJS or NUJS, Kolkata. It was established under the West Bengal Act IX of 1999 (WBNUJS Act, 1999) which was adopted by the West Bengal Legislature in July 1999. With the government of West Bengal, the Bar Council of India established WB National University of Juridical Sciences. WBNUJS is recognized by the University Grants Commission (UGC) under section 2(f) & 12(B) under Act, 1956.
In the early days, in the year 2000, classes were conducted at Aranya Bhavan. This is where the Environment Ministry of the government of West Bengal is situated. The students of the first batch lived in government flats.
In August 2004, the University was notified under Clause (f) of Section 2 of the UGC Act, 1956. In July 2005, the Bar Council of India granted permanent affiliation to WBNUJS.
The WB National University of Juridical Sciences, the Gujarat National Law University, and the National Law School of India University, Bengaluru, are the only law schools that have the Chief Justice of India as the law school's Chancellor. India Today has ranked WB National University of Juridical Sciences third amongst all the law colleges in the country.
WB National University of Juridical Sciences offers an LL.M. degree (1 year), B.A. LL.B. (Hons.) degree (5 years) and an LL.B. programme (3 years). The law school also conducts diploma, postgraduate diploma, Ph.D., M.Phil. and add-on certificate courses. Online courses are also conducted and students from seventeen countries across the world are pursuing these courses.
For getting admission to the WB National University of Juridical Sciences, students have to register with the university. Eligibility is based on the admission criteria and the percentage marks specified by the university. After meeting these standards, students have to clear the Common Law Admission Test (CLAT), held at the national level.

WB National University of Juridical Sciences aims at advancing and spreading knowledge and learning of legal processes and law and their duty in the nation's progress; make them productive devices of social development; enhance the qualities of a research scholar and make him aware of his responsibilities so that he can become skilful when it comes to law reforms, legal service, legislation, advocacy, etc.; and to encourage the interdisciplinary study of law with reference to technology, development, management and international cooperation

State of the Art Laboratories with sufficient space and all the necessary equipment are made available to various departments
The University has taken up the responsibility of imparting necessary, effective and practical education to the students so that they can reach great heights and attain maximum achievements in their life
Internet facilities may be availed by the students and teachers as per their needs

State Government and Central Government offers a number of scholarships to the meritorious students and the students belonging to SC / ST / OBC
The institution has provided ICT facilities like computers, projectors, audio-visual gadgets, scanners and printers to the departments and also other aids and a huge number of availability of books for effective delivery of curriculum and for inculcating the knowledge of the subject
A special complaint cell (Sexual Harassment Cell) has been formed for the female students in the college. Students can directly complain orally or by written application to the head of the cell. Apart from this, Ragging is strictly prohibited on the college campus
To sharpen the skill of students and their personality development, various curricular and extra-curricular activities are the regular features of the institution
The college also organizes workshops, seminars, and conferences for improving teaching skills and methodology
