The Modern College, Porompat (Dist. Imphal East) was established on 8th August 1963.

It is one of the premier colleges established to impart & provide in the field of higher education for the deserving candidates and prove to be a milestone on the part of progress.

The college is affiliated with the Manipur University, Canchipur and it is recognized by the University Grants Commission (UGC) under section 2(f) in 1980 & 12(B) in 1980 under Act, 1956.

It is re-accredited by National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) with "B" Grade (CGPA Score 2.52 on a 4 Point Scale in 2nd Cycle) on 21st February 2014.

It is a co-educational government institute, providing a regular course which is located in a semi-urban part of Imphal played a pioneering role in the field of higher education.

The college has awarded as the best college by the affiliating university and also a number of awards in publication, offering scholarship & also awarded by the different society.

The college offers three years undergraduate courses in Arts and Science streams with various specializations under Manipur University, Canchipur. It also offers Self -financed, Diploma, and Add-On Certificate courses.

The college has established an Internal Quality Assurance Cell (IQAC) on 12th July 2011 to assure the quality of the college and also details regarding submission of Annual Quality Assurance Reports (AQAR) to NAAC annually
Internet & Wi-Fi facilities may be availed by the students and teachers as per their needs

The college has a significant presence in the field of research. A number of major & minor research projects are awarded to the faculty members by the UGC and other bodies
The college has a large playground with well-equipment for different sports like Cricket, Football, Volleyball, Hockey, Badminton and so on
A medical facility has been available in the college for the benefit of the students
State Government and Central Government offers a number of scholarships to the meritorious students and the students belonging to SC / ST / OBC
The institution has provided ICT facilities like computers, projectors, audio-visual gadgets, scanners and printers to the departments and also other aids and a huge number of availability of books for effective delivery of curriculum and for inculcating the knowledge of the subject
A special complaint cell (Sexual Harassment Cell) has been formed for the female students in the college. Students can directly complain orally or by written application to the head of the cell. Apart from this, Ragging is strictly prohibited on the college campus
To sharpen the skill of students and their personality development, various curricular and extra-curricular activities are the regular features of the institution
The college also organizes workshops, seminars, and conferences for improving teaching skills and methodology
The college Unit NSS Wing performs different type of social services within and outside of the area
The college consists Women Cell to help female students. This cell helps and guides girls to sort out from their personal problem and avoid them from any harassment
