St. Xavier's College (Autonomous), Ahmedabad, was established on 15th June 1955. It is the only Grant-in-Aid Christian Institution of Higher Education in the State of Gujarat established under the management of Gujarat Province of Society of Jesus.

It is one of the premier institutions to impart & provide in the field of higher education for the deserving candidates and prove to be a milestone on the part of progress.

The institute gives preference for a socially discriminated group of students treating all humans equal to the children of God. St. Xavier's College aims at providing an outstanding education in Arts, Commerce, and Science with the principles of moral values for bringing out their aesthetic and social potentials.

The college is affiliated to Gujarat University, Ahmedabad and recognized by the University Grants Commission (UGC) under section 2(f) & 2(B) on 20th February 1980 under Act, 1956.

It is re-accredited by National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) with "A" Grade  - (CGPA Score 3.41 on a 4 Point Scale in 1st Cycle) on 25th October 2013.

St. Xavier’s College translates its academic goals into reality by offering 12 Career Oriented Programme courses in 2006. These courses are UGC approved and university recognized. There are 6 in arts and 6 in science. Some of the COP courses are career oriented. It ensures that once completed, a student is able to get a job in their field of specialization.

Apart from these career-oriented programs, the college offers three vocational courses, Biotechnology, Industrial chemistry and functional English focus heavily on career are also offered at the College.

The College Emblem contains the motto of the College: “Pravahito Gnanmaya Pravaha,” in Sanskrit, which means 'let the rivers of knowledge keep on flowing'. This is symbolized in the emblem by the 'river' (Sabarmati - Ahmedabad) and the 'bridge' that knowledge helps build.

Excellence in these fields is to be interpreted in terms of putting the skills developed in each at the service of the socially discriminated groups in our country with a view to setting up a society where all have equal opportunity as children of God
