SMCTE established in 1937 in response to the request for a Women’s B.Ed. (Formerly known as B.T.) College in the Region, is conducted by the Religieuxes Notre Dame des Missions (RNDM) working presently in twenty four countries. The primary aim of SMCTE is to impart quality teacher education in a conducive environment to Student-teachers so as to enable them to transform their knowledge and skills towards the development of society. We have been committed to the cause of education as we strongly believe that the quality of our classrooms in the state depends on the quality of teachers being prepared and trained in the Institutions of Teacher Education. The College continues its efforts of imparting quality teacher education and producing teachers of excellence who are champions of values that transform society.

SMCTE enjoyed a unique identity for a long time being the first Women B.Ed. College and also the first Accredited Teacher Education Institution in North East Region, it has been Re-accredited with Grade A (CGPA 3.12). SMCTE has a practicing School attached to it, besides other schools being available for Teaching Practice. The results of SMCTE have been most satisfactory. The Trainees feature in the first ten positions of NEHU and the majority of students securing First/Second Divisions. Over the past decades it has been rendering yeoman service to the cause of teacher education in the North east. Today many of the ex-students of SMCTE hold important positions in the field of education as head of departments and educational institutions as well as in administrative posts.

St. Mary’s College of Teacher Education is the first Accredited Teacher Education Institution in North East Region and it has been Re-accredited with Grade A (CGPA 3.12). The quality of training attracts a lot of candidates to approach for admission in the College. The College focuses not only on academics but also on an overall formation of the future teachers. The vision of the College is to provide value-based quality education to Student-teachers with a view to improve the quality of education in schools. With this end in view the College provides enhancement programmes every year with experts from all over – national and international. We have been extending our services by organising Extension Programmes to schools where most untrained teachers are in service; we give workshops and trainings in Core Skills of teaching in different schools of Khasi Hills, Jaintia Hills and Ri Bhoi Districts.

MOTTO - Virtue and Knowledge

St. Mary’s College of Teacher Education is named after the Blessed Virgin Mary, the woman who epitomized in herself the qualities of womanhood. Every student teacher is called to imitate her virtues of purity, modesty, simplicity, self-respect, courage and self-effacing love and inculcate them in the young who will pass through their hands. True knowledge leads to cultivation of virtues without which education loses its power of transforming society. True education contributes to the blossoming of the human being. Hence, “Students of St. Mary’s College of Teacher Education”; let us nobly do our part, tenaciously playing the game of life and aiming at virtue high. Let knowledge ennoble our lives and those around us.
