Sofia Girls' College (SGC), Birbhum was established in 1960.

To promote to higher education in this region of Birbhum District.

The aim of the college is to provide students with the knowledge and skills they need in this era of information and teaching and as well as to provide ideal environment to develop.

The college is a Private aided college and offers under graduate course in Arts stream.

The college is well equipped with all modern facilities. The College comes under the University of Burdwan.

This University was started in 1960 with Sukumar Sen as its first Vice-chancellor.

It occupies an exalted place amongst the universities of West Bengal.

It has been awarded with 4 star status by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) to acknowledge the contribution of Burdwan University in the educational development of the state.

The jurisdiction of the university spreads across five districts of West Bengal - Burdwan, Hooghly (excluding Serampore Subdivision), Bankura, Birbhum and Purulia, nourishing more than 100 colleges.
